Abilities/powers: The manga mentions him having some sort of power, but what it is isn't actually specified. From context it's probably something to do with destruction (he's the tower card, after all), though it only seems relevant to the Riffael personality, not the Riff one, so it's probably a moot point. Personality: Riff is a carefully crafted personality of servitude and devotion. He's one of these sensible, hard working people who literally live to serve other people… so long as those other people happen to be Cain Hargreaves. He's totally not above ruthlessness though, if someone threatens Cain, and he has an occasionally ambiguous sense of morality. Still, he's one of the good guys, and has never gone out of his way to harm anyone who hasn't deserved it. Riffael, however, is Riff's polar opposite. He has absolutely no morals, kills people just because he can, and is apparently destined to sink into insanity (if he's not already there, that is). He cares about nothing but himself and his own power, and god help anyone who gets in the way of his ambition or tries to stop him. Haibane Feather: Grey. | |

Once upon a time there was a young medical student by the name of Riffael Raffit who was involved in a terrible accident, his family home was burned down, killing both his parents and his younger brother, and leaving the poor young student badly injured. While in hospital recuperating and wishing to die Riff was visited by a friend of his father's, Lord Alexis Hargreaves, current head of the Hargreaves family, and offered a position in his household. During Riff's first night in the estate he comes across Alexis' 12-year-old son Cain digging a grave for a bird and notices some bleeding cuts on the boy's back. Because of this Riff finds himself assigned to be the boy's servant and discovers that the injuries are inflicted by Alexis. After discovering that Alexis enjoys torturing his son, Riff finds Cain studying a lump of arsenic laced sugar under the microscope, and realises that Alexis has slowly been poisoning his son. They soon discover that the reason Alexis hates Cain is because he's the son of both Alexis and his sister Augusta, and that giving birth to Cain drove her insane, as Augusta reveals after throwing herself out of a window, just before she dies. After this discovery Cain poisons his father's pipe and Alexis throws himself from the balcony, seemingly to his death, leaving Cain as the next Earl Hargreaves. Riff promises to Cain that he will always be by his side, no matter what happens. Shortly after that, Cain removes his household from the family castle in Cornwall to an estate in London and promotes Riff to the position of head butler. In London Cain finds his younger, illegitimate half-sister Merryweather, a cheerful girl both Cain and Riff came to dote on, though in Riff's case it's mostly because her happiness make Cain happy. He is completely devoted to his master and goes through several ordeals to ensure Cain stays as unhurt as possible, both mentally and emotionally, and he has a knack for finding Cain wherever he might disappear to. This includes, but it not limited to, taking poisoned spider bites, having knives thrown at him, and being shot at. Unfortunately, all of Riff's devotion to Cain is built on a false personality imprinted on Riff after the fire that killed his family. Cain finds this out while investigating and trying to bring down the mysterious organisation "Delilah", headed by his supposedly dead father. Riff betrays Cain without a hint of remorse, in fact he seems to enjoy hurting the young man, and returns to Delilah. It is revealed that the fire was actually started by Riffael, a decidedly Not Nice person. This is proved when he murders several people tying to stop him from killing Alexis to take his position as card master, and ultimately rule the world when their plan comes to fruition. There's also mention about Riffael having some sort of power (possibly of destruction, as he's Delilah's tower card, all important members being given the role of one of the cards in the tarot). It's also revealed that Riff was killed by his brother on the day of the fire, and became one of Delilah's "deadly doll" experiments kept alive by blood transfusions give when the false personality was reinforced. However, when Riffael tries to kill Cain after being betrayed by Alexis, the Riff personality resurfaces to resist, causing Riffael to shoot himself in the arm. The Riff personality confronts Riffael, and Riff manages to destroy, or at least subdue, his true self to save Cain. Riff is dying though, his body crumbling to dust. Though he is given a little extra time when Jezebel, Cain's half-brother and another of Delilah's agents, sacrifices himself so Riff can have his blood. That little time is all he needs, as he finds Cain and reaffirms his loyalty before death claims him for the last time. | |
